The History of LondonSkaters.com
July 2000LondonSkaters.com was started in July 2000 as a small set of pages on my personal web-space to share skating photos, mainly from the new BettyBlade streetskate. At the same time I created the London_Skaters Yahoo discussion group on the then OneList.com. This group was intended so we could easily communicate and arrange group skating events. Since then the website grew with skate and skate product reviews, articles, etc. Traffic and updates were a little on the quiet side in the winter of 2000/2001, but things soon picked up in the new year. In February 2001 I purchased the domain LondonSkaters.com, and moved the site there. 2001The site steadily grew throughout the summer of 2001, and in the 2001/2002 winter there was actually no drop-off in traffic as the website growth more than offset the usual seasonal decrease. 2001 saw the release of many more skate reviews, loads more pictures and articles, and a massive increase in traffic. 2002This year (2002) the site has become perhaps the biggest and busiest inline skating site in the U.K. with 9000 page views and 800 visitors served on average every day. The website itself currently takes up about 500MB of space, and serves over 30GB of traffic every month. That costs me not just a little cash for web space, bandwidth, and associated services and domains, but the enjoyment is worth it for me. In July 2002 I moved to a new web hosting provider, which enabled me to install our own forum software, and decommission the old Yahoo group. 2003The site still hasn't stopped growing, doing 20000 page views on many days. The user photo gallery has also become very active, with forum members posting many pictures.
