The Effects of Caffeine on Exercise

 

Caffeine has some unexpected effects on exercise.

Caffeine reduces exercise pain.

A recent study at the University of Georgia found that caffeine can reduce exercise pain, and surprisingly, that aspirin doesn't work nearly as well.  It also suggests that this might be part of the reason caffeine improves endurance performance (see below).

"That cup of coffee in the morning does more than wake you up. It can also help you feel less pain during your morning workout. That's what researchers at UGA found in a recent study exploring why muscles hurt during exercise."

Caffeine improves endurance performance.

"Caffeine is one of the most widely used stimulants in the world."

"Research provided by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has shown that ingestion of 3-9 mg of caffeine per kilogram (kg) of body weight one hour prior to exercise increased endurance running and cycling performance of well-trained, recreational athletes in the laboratory."

Caffeine might not be that bad for your health.

"Caffeine, however, has been condemned by "clean living" advocates because it has no nutritional value, is not needed for any physiologic function, and is commonly abused by the tired and stressed. As a result, many coffee drinkers worry that their early morning mug-full will contribute to health problems. The truth is, caffeinated beverages in moderation are not health demons"

"Because caffeine enhances performance in many individuals, it has been banned by the International Olympic Committee. But ironically, the level at which caffeine is banned far exceeds the amount needed to enhance performance."
