Roll-R-Sport

A South African Skating Club

by Jack Njoroge

Club history

The Roll’’R”Way Roller Skating club was started at a public roller skating rink in Gezina, Pretoria in 1981. Lilly Richards and Madeleine Van Heerden Owners of the rink saw the need to start a club.

Roller “R” Way Roller Skating club is a registered sporting club affiliated to the Northern Gauteng Roller-Skating association and Roller Sport South Africa. Roller Sport SA is affiliated to the SA-Sport Confederation and-Olympic Committee (SASCOC).

Members become part of an Organized Sport with many exciting Opportunities and healthy physical activities! The club also gives skaters the opportunity to travel to different cities and even countries give skaters the chance to meet other skaters from all over the country and the world and make new friends. Keep skaters busy with a good pastime that is good for them and keeps them away from drugs, crime and violence.

Roll”R”Way has had more skaters in the South African team than any other club in the country. We have always had huge success at Provincial and National.

A typical training Week

The training schedule for the club is Monday, Wednesday from 4:30pm to 6pm and Saturday from 8:30am to 10:30am

What’s nice about training in South Africa, and also what’s difficult.

The nice thing to train in South Africa is the social and support you can get from the members and Coach in the club and also plenty of areas were you can skate, especially in parks most of them are very smooth to skate on for fitness and recreation, maybe the difficult part is there are few skating clubs around SA.

How the club promotes the sport, particularly with the high cost of equipment

By being the top club in SA which produces best speed skaters every year to participate in championship and the World, the club also participate in promoting the roller sport development in the country and Africa, being known as one of the best speed skaters comes from the club it motivates other small clubs in South Africa and Africa to build up and develop the sport.

A little about some of the great experiences you or anyone else in the club has had through skating

I personally have got a lot of experience and fantastic training with the club, I used to travel from Johannesburg East to Pretoria for skating which I believe is around 60km, later I decided to move near the truck.  The support I get here is more than enough from apparel to equipment among others. The most amazing thing also is our coach Wendy as she is one of the best coaches I have ever met No words to 2 describe.

In memory of Willie and Madeleine

The club was started by the Richards and van Heerden families and both families still have strong ties with the sport. Willie van heerden has been doing a tremendous work within South Africa and Africa, he was in contact with other Africa Roller Sport supporting them in defferent way, as I remember he was the official Referee of Nairobi inline 2003 and Nairobi inline 2004. The sad deaths of Willie and Madeleine van Heerden in 2006 is very difficult to recover from but we are building the sport stronger than ever before to honour the legacy they left us.

Let me know if you need more information

Regards, Jack Speed skater
