Zephyr Inline Skate Tours update

April 2002

Mike:  This is a transcript of an email from Allan Wright, president of Zephyr Inline Skate Tours, together with some photos.  They've been reproduced here with permission from Allan.

I found Allan's site on the internet some time ago, but have never gotten around to taking one of these skate tours.  They look like they could be a lot of fun and well worth going on.

Over to Allan:

Hello skaters,

This email is going to everyone on our Skate Tours database and is one of three we send out each year. We send this "blind carbon copy" so that your privacy is maintained. If you would like to be removed from this email list, please let me know directly as this is a human-controlled email list.

If you have moved recently and would like to remain on our postal mailing list to receive future skate tour catalogs, please email me with your new address. If you would like to be removed from our database entirely, please let me know that also. Following are updates on our 2002 Skate Tours:

1. Let me start by throwing two statistics at you. First, 50% of our tour bookings are from repeat customers. Second, 93% of the people on our database (and by association this email list) have never been on one of our tours. What does that tell me? For whatever reason, most people never take a tour with us but those who do love them and return often.

We know there are many reasons skaters do not take a tour with us and for some (cost, vacation time, etc) we have no answer! However, if you have hesitated because you are leery to sign up on your own, are not sure a group tour is for you, or think you are not good enough or too good a skater, we do have an answer! I encourage you to email me directly with your concerns and I will help to allay them. Here is just one of our sample answers to the concern of going on a group tour, written by a customer on our Florida tour in March: "What we really like about your tours is that they are so flexible. We can skate a lot or a little and it is no problem. It is like having a "personalized" group tour! (Sounds like an oxymoron and it would be with any other tour group.)"

2. We recently completed our first skate tour of the season, the five-day tour of Florida mentioned above. We use three great trails between Orlando and the Gulf Coast of Florida. 25 skaters from all over the United States and Europe joined our three guides on this tour. Our next Florida Tour is not until December, since we skip the hot summer months.

3. Our next tour will be in a brand new location, Hilton Head Island on the coast of South Carolina. Hilton Head has a fantastic paved trail system in addition to its famous beaches, resorts, and golf courses. We use Hilton Head for a Learn-to-Skate Tour for beginners and advanced beginner skaters. If you have never yet skated or are still a bit shaky, join us in Hilton Head on May 3-7. We have 23 booked but can take one or two more!

4. We are currently 45% ahead of bookings as compared to last year and many of our tours are full or almost so. Our new Multisport Tours seem especially popular; our Lake Tahoe Tour has a spot for only one male skater (one bed left) and our first Burgundy Tour has 18 booked. If you are planning to join a tour this year, don't wait to pick your tour.

5. As you might know, we now have a sister tour company called Active Culture Tours that runs biking and hiking trips in China. Our first-ever tour is May 19th and we have 19 people booked for the nine-day tour. We can take one or two more. See http://www.ActiveCultureTours.com.

6. I would like to give you one final tip that applies to Zephyr Inline Skate Tours, Active Culture Tours, or any other tour company you might consider. This is what I would do, even as a tour operator owner. If you are interested in a tour, I suggest you call or email our office and perhaps mention a couple of locations that are most enticing to you. You should then describe your age, skating ability, and whether you plan to come alone or with a friend or spouse. We can then help you pick the right tour for you, as picking the right tour can be the difference between a very good and an awesome tour.

Happy Skating!

Allan Wright
