Velovision - a review

July 2006

Velovision is one of those hidden gems of the cycling magazine world.  It's an excellent magazine with beautiful photos and really aimed at the reader.  I think there's a very noticeable attempt to make each review as fair and unbiased as possible, with no pandering to advertisers, and a genuine love for cycling absolutely shines through from the editor.  It's about practical cycling in the way so many of us use bikes, and much less about racing and lycra.

Typical subjects covered

  • Trailers - plenty of detailed reviews of trailers of all kinds.  Kids trailers, touring trailers, load carrying, etc. etc.
  • Buying guides - folding bikes, family cycling, load carrying, cycle touring, utility cycling, recumbent bikes, recumbent trikes, special needs, etc.
  • Loads of individual reviews, covering a huge range of cycling.  Things such as the Bakfiets, a clever load carrying bike from the Netherlands, velomobiles, utility bicycles, etc.
  • Stories, often of cycle touring, or the breadmen of Cairo, moving house via bike, the pedal paramedic, etc.  All are genuinely good articles interesting to most.

The magazine doesn't cover much in the way of road racing and mountain bikes, as those are dealt with by other magazines.

Conclusion

I strongly recommend subscribing to this publication.  It's a delightful roundup of all of cycling's facets, but particularly those that receive little or no coverage from magazines such as Cycling Plus or Moutain Biking UK.  It's so good I couldn't possibly recommend it enough, each issue is eagerly read the moment it arrives on my doorstep.
