The London Skate - Wednesday night

The Official London Street Skate Event

Website: The London Skate website

The London Skate was known as the BettyBlade Wednesday Night Skate last year, and was incredibly popular, with the largest skate having around 450 people.  It was the first and best large organised street skate in London, U.K.  Well, all right, Paris and Munich amongst others (up to tens of thousands of skaters) would no doubt laugh at a street skate with so few skaters, but it's the biggest in the UK at the moment, and it is growing all the time.  :)

Summer only for now

The London Wednesday night skate runs each Wednesday night, starting from the Serpentine Road near the bandstand, close to Hyde Park Corner.  People meet at 19.30 and the skate departs at 20.00 or so.  The organisers have taken the decision to run the skate during the summer months only, at least for now.

The BettyBlade London skate returned in 2001, renamed as the London Skate, and has become properly organized, marshalled, and is extremely well run.  The marshals have had training in first aid, blocking traffic, and handling a large crowd skating on the street.  I went on the skate recently, and was well impressed with their professionalism.

Can I hire Skates?

Bananablades.com hire out skates which get delivered to the London Skate start point, or you can see this page for skate shops that rent / hire skates.

What about the Winter?

A number of keen skaters continue to skate Wednesday nights whenever the weather is dry enough.

Check out this video of the London Skate.  Be warned, it's 13MB so a big download.  The coolest streetskate party in town!
