Sunday 27th January

Oops, it looks like something went a bit wrong with those video clips I last posted.  I also forgot to put up the source website - go check out CentralParkSkate.com. I'd still recommend you check out the dance video to "What is Love", by Haddaway from the dance circle (7MB, found on the front page - top left thumbnail) and slalom action to "Rainbow in the Dark" by Dio (6.4MB, found after clicking on the "New Videos" link in the middle of the thumbnails from the main page).

Anyone into roller basketball?  I got the following invite from Marco Burnus with details about the first rollerbasketball world championships in Europe.  In fact, does anyone know of any rollerbasketball being played in the UK?  If so, please contact me!

In a couple of weeks I should have two new reviews of 2002 model skates, so keep checking back!

Tuesday 1st January 2002!

First post of the new year!  Happy New Year, everybody, and may 2002 bring you even more skating happiness.

Alex Nicholls has written an article about hockey in Hyde Park for the newer players.  There's a great core bunch of skaters that started playing hockey last year and have a good time playing pickup games in the park most dry weekends.

I came across these interesting articles in the last few weeks:

  • Snow and Ice - gems below freezing point.  This isn't inline skating related, but the last part of the article is about the search for faster ice for speedskating ice rinks.  I enjoyed the whole article anyway.  You'll need Adobe Acrobat to read the document.
  • Bont, a manufacturer of custom speedskating boots, has an article here about custom boots and why they are the best.  Interesting, even if it is an out and out marketing "killer" article.

Wednesday 26th December

Posted a new video of a one footed barrel roll on the videos page.

Earlier in the month Battersea played the ULU team at the Elephant and Castle leisure centre, where I took this group photo.  Unfortunately the match was somewhat one-sided, and Battersea won by a significant margin.

A while I ago I came across the NewYorkSkate.com website with a load of cool videos.  Some of the videos are pretty big, but are worth the long download.

Saturday 8th December

Posted a page with maps, websites, and other details of ice skating locations in London here.  I tend to skate at Streatham most often, because it's closer and is much larger than Queens.  They don't maintain the ice very well, though.

Saturday 1st December

Last Saturday I visited Skatefresh's indoor skate school and took some photos, which are posted here.  I took my skates and had a bunch of fun talking to people and skating around, which was a good opportunity to practise some hockey skills.  I also really enjoyed everyone hanging out and having a good time.  Isn't it amazing how many friends you can make skating?  I've met most of my friends in the UK through skating, which is partly why I love skating so much.  Not only is skating one of the best and most fun forms of exercise, but I think it's got about the best social side of any sport as well.

Plumstead hockey was great fun last Wednesday.  If you're available on Wednesday nights, why not come down and play with the recreational session.  All players are welcomed by Nick Knight, and contact hockey is sooo much fun.

Wednesday 28th November

Started a new page with details on inline hockey clubs in London.  Plumstead is looking for players to join in the senior session with full protective kit on Wednesdays.  This is a contact game.

Tuesday 27th November

A message from Gerry Harrison, a councillor in Camden who has an open air area suitable for skating.  Anyone interested in starting up a regular skating activity here?

subject : A NEW SKATING VENUE
Dear Mike,
I met a skater today, Christophe Pointreau, who told me about your website.
I am a local councillor in the London Borough of Camden, and in my ward (South End, NW3) there's a site which has enormous potential for a roller-blading area. It is 1000 square metres of smooth flat surface, surrounded by a eight foot high wall.
I am trying to "market" it because I want to see a positive use made of this site, which is owned by Camden's Housing Dept, and if, for example, rollerblade/skate hockey was played here (Christophe says it would take two pitches) which could also involve some of the local young people, then I and Camden Council would be delighted. There might even be funding to develop it further.
Please direct all enquiries to my e mail address.

Sunday 18th November

I've reproduced an article by Steve from www.SkatingTutor.com on how to skate a grapevine.  Come take a look here.  I've also written a short article on how to skate heel-to-toe.  Pretty simple, but I still remember the clear and easy way I was shown how to do this.

Thursday 15th November

Tom Holland has kindly reviewed his Tour TR902 hockey skates here.

Thursday 8th November

I've reviewed my pair of 2001 Mission Wicked Light ViBE skates here.  I love these skates for indoor hockey!  :)

Saturday 3rd November

Photos from the London Skate Halloween skate are up here.  Thanks to Mateusz Gostyński for the pictures!

Friday 2nd November

We're back into the dreaded winter now, with the clocks being set back last Sunday, there's no return for another 5 months, unfortunately.  Thank goodness for indoor hockey and even some ice skating.  :)

SkateFresh have announced a new indoor skate school in November and December, details of which are posted here.

Saturday 27th October

Posted a new article here, describing how to learn the barrel roll.
