Saturday 23rd MarchHow do you feel about participating in big organised street skates - check out the link? There's been some discussion on the newsgroup rec.sport.skating.inline here, with some articles linked to in the discussion. Here's quite a cool video clip from roller.ru, a popular Russian inline skating website, showing footage of an indoor skate festival in Moscow near Red Square. The video clip is hosted on Skategrrl.com, and is pretty large at 13 MB. It's a big download, but worth looking at. Also received another email from Kazuharu Morita with more slalom video clips from Japan. LondonSkaters.com keeps getting more popular, to the extent that I'm going to have to do something about the video downloads for those videos hosted locally. I have a web space allocation of 500MB and am allowed 5GB of downloads per month, which I'm due to exceed this month. Not surprising, really, with some 600 unique visitors a day on average. Looks like I'm going to have to purchase some more bandwidth soon. :( Thursday 14th MarchPublished a tutorial on heel braking here in the How-To section. There's detailed colour photos and video showing the technique. Kenny McDonald sent in a link to his short story on a bunch of skater friends. It's aimed at the younger reader, and can be found on his site. Sk8Five and the Mystery of Hammond Hall. Wednesday 13th MarchUpdate - the big Salomon party has been delayed until 8th May because of the protests due on 1st May. The official London Skate is due to start again on the 24th April. Yeah, can't wait! This session is a warm up for the big one the week after. On the next London Skate on 1st May, Salomon are going to be throwing a huge skate party for everyone on the skate. They've hired out Bagley's studio, home of the London Roller Disco, and will be promoting the skate and party beforehand, and will be handing out drinks and giveaways during the skate. They'll also be filming both the skate and the party. Awesome, man! Monday 11th MarchAnyone want to become an IISA instructor? UK Skate Patrol is running a course, anyone welcome. The confirmed dates = March 22-23-24 (lasts in total 2 1/2 days) Cost = 260 Euros. Interested? Contact Christophe@ukskatepatrol.com. Interested in some more slalom movies? Check these out, sent to me by Kazuharu Morita. Wednesday 5th MarchWeyhey, the weather seems to be improving slowly. We've had just a few nice sunny days recently, and towards the end of this month we go to British summer time. As far as I'm concerned, that's the start of spring for me. Salomon have finally made their 2002 website update, so now you can see full details of all the 2002 model skates online. Have you been to the newsgroup rec.sport.skating.inline? There's a huge amount of discussion there, and it's a good fun skating forum to hang out in. If you find it difficult to configure a newsreader such as Microsoft Outlook Express, Google makes things much easier with their web interface to this skating newsgroup. Sunday 17th FebruaryWent skating in Hyde Park this weekend for the first time in ages. I managed to force myself to leave the hockey kit and skates behind, and just took my recreational skates instead so I could do the social thing. Hockey is just too addictive! It was really great skating around and meeting so many of my friends and all the faces from last summer. We also took the kid and skated around with him in the three wheeler buggy, pretty cool! If you're a London skater, and you haven't already checked out www.SerpentineRoad.com, it's worth a visit. Actually it's a complete verbal abuse system for the skating community in London, but it's pretty funny (even though the webmaster takes the mickey out of me. If I find you I'm gonna kick your ass! Hehehehehe, just kidding :). Saturday 10th FebruaryLex van Buuren has sent an article about his company's skate tour to Paris, together with a couple of pictures from previous tours. Looks like fun! Lex and company are also due here London in the summer, and would like to extend an invitation to any interested London Skaters to come along. The tour, run by his skate company, www.skate-a-round.com, should be here 26th-28th July. I've found another interesting skating video on the internet. Ever heard of windskating? This is a combination of a windsurfing-type sail with inline skating. Check out this video from www.raramuri.com. Two manufacturer's websites are in the Netherlands www.skatewing.com, or in the USA www.windskate.com. Two summers ago some SkateWing.com people were in Hyde Park, but there just wasn't enough wind for them to be able to demonstrate their product well enough. Tuesday 6th FebruaryInterested in more of Salomon's 2002 skate models? This graphic has some details on the Trainer and XTrainer range. Joost Hartman of Rollerbasketball fame, and one of the organisers of the world cup mentioned below, sent along this picture. Looks like a lot of fun if you like both skating and basketball, and I bet this sport will do wonders for your balance, agility, and mobility on skates. Check out the rollerbasketball world cup invitation here. Sorry for the lack of updates recently. With the awful weather and this being the depths of winter, outdoor skating is not really happening for me, and that's impacted my motivation to work on the website. Also, we just had a new addition to the family, so I have even less time than before. :) Pretty cool to me, though. At least there's still plenty of indoor hockey, and there's always ice skating as well. I sure can't wait for summer in the Park again. Anyway, there's a bunch of new reviews and articles to be posted soon..
