BananaGuard

June 2005

This rather strange looking product has gained a lot of attention in the last year or two, getting more and more popular all the time, including winning cycling product of the year 2004 in Cycling Plus magazine.

Bananas are one of the choice foods of endurance athletes, and although they come in a disposable and bio-degradable natural wrapper, there's one disadvantage.  Crush or bruise your banana in a backpack or cycling pocket, and most people won't want to eat the resulting goo any more.

Here's where the Banana Guard comes in.  It's a lightweight plastic shell that prevents the dreaded banana squash, and comes in a multitude of colours.  I've been using a couple of these for a few months now, and they're great.  In that time I've not yet found a banana that doesn't fit in either, though Elese of Serpentine Road fame found one that needed to be bent slightly to fit.

There is one slight disadvantage, the shape.  Pull out a banana guard for the first time and you'll get some odd looks and funny comments. :)
