Giro Pneumo Helmet Review

Lone Star version - I got the grey.

A few months ago I had to buy a new helmet as my older ones had either broken or become unfit to wear.  Having asked around, the most recommended helmet was a Giro Pneumo, hence this review.

I was very impressed with the helmet upon receipt - it has super build quality and is reasonably light at 320g for the medium size I have, not as light as some helmets though.  The helmet does leave small dents in your scalp after a couple hours of wearing it, but this isn't a problem and doesn't detract from the excellent level of comfort at all.

Pneumo Ventilation

Wow, this helmet has an amazing amount of ventilation.  It's really light and airy, so much so that you'll almost certainly need to wear some kind of helmet cap under there in colder weather else your head will be super-cooled.

There are one or two minor disadvantages with so much ventilation - being a little hair challenged, the sun shines through the large gaps and I sometimes get a sunburnt W on my forehead.  Oops!  Another one is that at speed the massive vents are pretty good at catching insects.  I haven't been stung yet in a couple months of use, but I confess to feeling a little nervous once or twice.  I'd rate both of these as minor issues though, the quality and comfort of the helmet is outstanding.

Giro Helmet Straps and Adjustments

The Pneumo has two separate items holding it onto your head.  First is their Roc-Loc 4 system which is a clever and easily adjustable head size and fit adjustment at the rear.  This is surprisingly easy to use and works very well to give a comfortable fit.

Second is a standard set of straps to go under your chin, nice and soft but otherwise unremarkable.

Conclusion

A great helmet, very comfortable, and one I can wear all day.  It's light, cool, and relatively stylish, but pricey.  Given the comfort, coolness, and mega-style factor, I think the overdraft pain was worth it.

Disclaimer

Helmets don't necessarily prevent head injury, and I make no warranty that the helmet is suitable for you, that it will protect you, etc. etc.  When buying a helmet always follow the manufacturers' instructions regarding fit and suitability for the purpose you intend using it.
