Montane Featherlite Velo JacketJune 2007
It's a super-lightweight windproof that packs down to an incredibly small size, about the same as a large apple. This is perfect for my skating and cycling needs, because I don't often have a lot of carry space and yet it's very important to have that extra bit of emergency warmth available if the weather turns inclement. It's made of Pertex, probably the very thinnest and lightest version, and is quite breathable. I bought the black/graphite version, but there are other colours available, such as flourescent yellow, blue/graphite, and red/graphite. The jacket is very no-frills, with no pockets, just two reflective stripes, and not much else. There are no fancy features such as under-arm zips or a fleece collar, but they wouldn't be appropriate for the small pack size anyway. I've used it a couple of times in the park to protect from cold evenings, and it was great. The jacket was however a real bonus on the London to Brighton skate recently, as we had a big shower hit us en-route. I would have been seriously cold and uncomfortable without the jacket, as it kept me comfortably warm and dry, the water just beading off. Best of all, I wouldn't have had another jacket with me due to very limited carry space, so the tiny packed size is a huge bonus. Layers really are best when doing exercise, and this one is good for the final outer layer to protect you from the wind and/or rain. I wouldn't call the jacket rain-proof though, as it's only described as water-repellent. That's perfect for much of what we get here in the UK, of course, but if you want serious warmth and weather proofing, you'll need to go to a heavier jacket. I highly rate this jacket, it's now one of my favourite bits of clothing and I'm tempted to get another one!
