Seba MX Slalom SkateJune 2005by Ivan Teo
FrameA 231mm frame came with the skate. The frame is constructed double void and is extruded aluminium 7000. The frame is very stiff and provides excellent power transfer. Frames with varying lengths will be provided with differently sized boots. The stiffness of the frame does make for difficulty when inserting and removing wheels. BootThe boot is mainly a single speed boot with a high ankle liner inserted into the boot. The bottom of the boot is stiff and comes with a Velcro strap at the toes and ratchet strap at the ankle portion. A flimsy plastic cuff accompanies the liner to provide lateral support. The boot does have a flaw. It is designed for narrow feet, and broad flat feet may have a problem with the sidewall of the skates crushing their feet or toes. The buckle feels cheap. The prototype model came with a cuff screw that can be adjusted to raise or lower the cuff according to skater preference. The sides of the boot come with an additional piece of leather that acts as a scruff pad as well. The most important part of the boot is it’s mounting block. Each mounting block has 7 holes to allow for mounting of most frames available in the market. Wheels and Bearings76mm 85A SebaMX wheels and Abec 7 608 are provided. The wheels are not capable of taking a whole lot of abuse, and wear out unnaturally fast compared to regular wheels available in the market. ComfortComfort of the skate is achieved through the removable liner. The replaceable liner is comfortable but a tad bit too thin. Under the liner is a shock absorber attached to the liner via a Velcro pad. The worse part of the skate is the lacing system. Having a cuff that is stiff with lace eyelets placed under the cuffs made for a trying experience lacing the skates. It takes a good 15 minutes to get laced up before I’m laced up and completely skating. HandlingThe handling is fantastic. The skate is stiff and responsive. The short frame does wonders as heel and toe wheeling tricks are easily achieved. The soft upper liner that is supported by a cuff makes for easy squatting without compromising control. ConclusionThe skate is a well designed skate for slalom and slides. Overall quality is acceptable for the price and it looks flashy enough for you to want to be seen in them.
